Why do new tea towels absorb poorly?

A new tea towel may look perfect but still push water around on the glass the first few times it is used. This does not necessarily mean that the textile is of poor quality. Absorption depends on the fiber, the weave and the treatments the fabric has received during production.

In particular, finishing agents, softeners and a dense, smooth surface can affect how quickly water comes into contact with the hydrophilic fibers.

The chemistry of the fiber and the surface of the fabric are two different things

CottonWorks describes cotton as cellulose-based and naturally capable of attracting water. However, the final absorbency of the fabric also depends on the yarn, weave and finish. An absorbent fiber material can therefore still feel slow if the surface is treated in a way that inhibits rapid wetting.

The same principle applies to linen: the fiber can be highly absorbent, while the first hand feel of the finished product is determined by the entire finishing process.

Some emollient finishes inhibit rewetting

In their technical material on chemical finishing, CottonWorks notes that certain cationic softeners can provide undesirable water repellency, while other types are better when rewetting is important – for example in towels.

This is one of the explanations why washing can change the function. Washing removes residue and changes the surface so that water reaches the fibers more easily.

Wash before first use

Always follow the washing instructions, but a new kitchen towel should usually be washed before use. For linen, the Alliance for European Flax-Linen & Hemp recommends regular washing according to the specific product's instructions and states that linen becomes more flexible through washing and use.

Avoid overdosing on detergent. Residues in the fabric can be counterproductive when the goal is rapid absorption.

Be careful with fabric softener

Fabric softeners can change the surface of the fibers and reduce rewetting. Therefore, if the main function of the tea towel is to absorb water, extra softness is not necessarily an advantage.

Follow the manufacturer's care instructions. A good dishcloth doesn't have to feel super soft to work well; some texture can be part of its drying ability.

The short answer

A new dishcloth is therefore best evaluated after proper washing and a few uses. If the goal is high absorbency, prioritize suitable fiber and construction, wash before first use, and be cautious with finishing products that can make the surface water-repellent.

Convenient to remember

The construction also affects what “good absorbency” means in practice. A thin, tightly woven linen dishcloth can absorb water efficiently and dry quickly again, while a thicker terry towel can hold a larger total amount of water. The two products solve different tasks. For glasses and cutlery, a smooth, lint-free surface is often valued; for hands, volume may be more important. Therefore, a new dishcloth should not be evaluated only on how much water it absorbs in one stroke. Also look at whether it leaves lint, how quickly it dries between uses, and how the hand feel develops after the first few washes. A good kitchen textile is a balance point between several properties.

Air drying or drying according to the care label can also affect the initial hand feel, so consider a new dishcloth after several normal washes rather than after the first wipe straight from the packaging.
