Sakami Kogei – Japanese Metalwork and Modern Design

Sakami Kogei is run by Mr Sakami, who comes from a Kyoto family of metalworkers and has worked professionally with metal for decades. The workshop brings this experience to useful objects in which precise shape, measured surface and everyday function are closely connected.
Hera Shibori shapes a flat sheet
In Hera Shibori, a metal sheet is fixed against a form on a heavy lathe. It rotates while the maker gradually presses it towards the form with a rod-like tool. Angle, pressure and sequence are judged continuously: excessive force may distort the material, while too little will not move it enough.
Metsuke creates the brushed finish
After shaping, Metsuke gives the surface its matt, directional texture. The finish does not conceal the metal; it makes marks, reflections and touch part of the expression. Brass develops its tone gradually, especially where the object is handled.
Brass or silver-plated brass
Uncoated brass has a warm golden colour and develops a natural patina. Silver plating gives a cooler, brighter appearance, but it too changes with use. The choice concerns both colour and how you wish to experience the material ageing.
Simple forms with a clear purpose
Obon and Bank Tray serve for presentation, storage and organisation, while the Hime forks express the same understanding at a smaller scale. The forms remain calm because proportion, edge and surface carry the design. Wipe with a soft cloth and follow the individual care instructions.
