Handmade bentō box made of hinoki cypress from Hida Takayama in Gifu Prefecture.

The hinoki bento box is not cut, but curved from knot-free hinoki wood and held together with hand-twisted cherry bark. The box is lacquered in the Shunkei tradition — a transparent finish where the wood's natural growth rings shine through.
This ancient Japanese technique, called magemono, requires years of experience and cannot be automated, so each box is unique and slightly different from the next.
Behind the beautiful box stands Nishitame — one of the few remaining workshops in Takayama that still masters the entire process from bending to painting.
Since the 700s, Takayama has supplied Japan's most experienced woodworkers - the so-called Hida no takumi, whose hands shaped temples and shrines in the old imperial capital.
That tradition lives on in the town's workshops. The Hida Shunkei lacquer, which is a speciality of the region, mixes perilla oil into the lacquer, giving it a unique, vibrant transparency that highlights the already beautiful nature of the wood. The lacquer protects against mold and moisture, and makes the box light and durable.
The box comes with bamboo sticks in matching sizes.
