How to Wash, Dry and Store Crystal Glassware Safely
Begin with the maker’s instructions
Crystal glassware is not all alike. Some pieces tolerate a gentle dishwasher cycle, while hand-cut or decorated glasses may require hand washing. Always check the product care guidance first. When uncertain, calm hand washing is the cautious choice.
Wash one glass at a time
Use lukewarm water, a little mild detergent and a soft clean sponge or cloth. Avoid abrupt temperature changes, abrasives and contact with cutlery or other glasses. A folded tea towel in the sink can provide a forgiving surface against accidental knocks.
Support without twisting
Hold close to the area being cleaned. On stemware, never rotate the bowl and foot in opposite directions; twisting stresses the stem junction. Keep a secure dry grip on heavy tumblers, and avoid letting rings strike the cut surface.
Dry before drops become marks
Let water drain briefly, then dry with a clean lint-free cloth. Use one hand for support and the other to polish small areas without pressure. With hard-water marks, thorough rinsing and prompt drying are safer than forceful polishing.
Store upright with space
Stand glasses on their foot or base, not on the drinking rim, leaving air between each piece. Do not stack unless the maker has specifically designed them for stacking. A closed cupboard limits dust; when serving, lift from the base rather than the fine rim.
