About MAC
MAC is a Japanese knife maker with roots dating back to 1965. The idea for the MAC knife, however, began in the 1950s, when the company’s founder was studying in Chicago and working in a restaurant kitchen.
His experience with the heavy and relatively cumbersome Western kitchen knives of the time became the starting point for an ambition to create a knife that was lighter, sharper and more comfortable to work with.
Today, MAC knives are made in Seki in Gifu Prefecture, one of Japan’s historic centres for sword and knife making. Here, the knives are shaped, assembled, polished and sharpened within a long-established Japanese craftsmanship tradition. Since its founding, MAC has grown into an internationally recognised knife brand with millions of knives sold worldwide.
MAC combines Japanese cutting performance with a more Western-oriented, user-friendly construction. The relatively thin blades, low weight and precise sharpening provide a clean and controlled cut, while the steel is selected to offer a well-balanced combination of sharpness, edge retention and practical maintenance.
The result is a range of kitchen knives without unnecessary details, developed first and foremost as working tools. This has made MAC popular with professional chefs and quality-conscious home cooks alike who want Japanese sharpness combined with a knife that feels natural in everyday use.
