How big should a tablecloth be? A simple measuring guide
The right tablecloth size depends on two measurements: the size of the tabletop and how far you want the tablecloth to hang over the edge. For general table coverings, several European textile manufacturers recommend about 20–30 cm of overhang on each side.
This means that you shouldn't choose a tablecloth based on the table length alone. For example, a 100 × 200 cm table requires extra fabric in both width and length.
The formula for a rectangular table
Measure the width and length of the table. Multiply the desired overhang by two and add the result to both measurements. If you want a 25 cm overhang, the formula is: table width + 50 cm and table length + 50 cm.
A 100 × 200 cm table will therefore fit a tablecloth around 150 × 250 cm if you want about 25 cm of overhang all the way around. Standard measurements are not always exactly there, so choose the closest measurement based on the desired effect.
Round tables are calculated on the same principle
For a round table, take the diameter of the table and add twice the desired overhang. A table with a diameter of 120 cm and a 25 cm overhang therefore requires a tablecloth with a diameter of approximately 170 cm.
If you use a square tablecloth on a round table, the corners will fall further down than the middle of the sides. This may be a deliberate visual choice, but measure the drop before ordering.
Everyday or formal table setting?
An overhang of around 20–30 cm is practical for everyday use, as the tablecloth lies flat without coming too far down over guests' legs. For more formal table settings, a longer drop can be chosen if the table and chairs allow space.
Curt Bauer and Beauvillé specify 20–30 cm as a common starting point. This is a recommendation – not a standard that must be followed in all rooms.
Remember the extension plates
If the table is often used with extensions or additional leaves, you need to decide whether one tablecloth will cover both configurations. A very long tablecloth may work well on the extended table, but will create a large overhang in everyday life.
If you have both measurements, it may be more elegant with two tablecloth sizes or a solution made for the long table.
The short answer
Start with the actual dimensions of the table and then choose the overhang. With this method, “what size tablecloth?” becomes a simple calculation – and you avoid buying a standard size that doesn’t fit your particular table.

Convenient to remember
The chairs are a good additional control point. Place a chair next to the table and hold a tape measure from the edge of the table down to the length you are considering. That way you can immediately see whether 30 cm feels elegant or inconvenient in your particular room. If the table has very thick sides or armchairs, a long overhang may meet the furniture earlier than expected. Also measure the table top – not the nominal table model for the room. Rounded corners, oval ends and custom-built tables can make standard measurements less obvious. With expensive linen tablecloths, it is worth spending five minutes on this test, because the visual result depends more on the proportions between the table and the drop than on the number on the packaging.
