Care guide for leather trays

How to care for your leather tray

Laperruque's vide-poche is made of vegetable-tanned calfskin with no lacquer. That means the leather is alive: it absorbs a little oil from your hands, darkens over time and develops a patina that differs from tray to tray. That is not wear – it is how good leather becomes more beautiful.

Daily use

  • Wipe the tray with a dry, soft cloth. Avoid damp cloths, soap and cleaning products.
  • Do not place it in direct sunlight or close to radiators and hobs – heat dries the leather out and can discolour it.
  • Do not put wet items in the tray, and do not let water sit on the leather. If drops land on it, dab them off at once and let the tray dry slowly at room temperature.
  • Sharp objects, ballpoint pens and perfume can leave permanent marks.

Stains and scratches

  • Light scratches and marks in the naturel leather can often be rubbed out with a clean finger or a soft cloth – the warmth of your hand lets the leather settle.
  • Grease marks usually become less visible on their own as the whole surface develops a patina.
  • Do not use saddle soap, wax or waterproofing – the leather is already nourished with natural oils and waxes from the tannery. A very dry tray can, after some years, be given a small amount of colourless leather balm, applied thinly with a soft cloth and polished off.

Shape and storage

  • The tray is moulded without seams and holds its shape by itself. Avoid bending the edges or stacking heavy items on top.
  • The three sizes nest inside each other – place a piece of soft fabric between them if they are stored stacked for a long time.
