Stoneware salt shaker - midnight blue glaze
A handmade stoneware salt shaker with a midnight blue glaze, 7–8 cm in diameter. Stoneware is fired at 1200–1315 °C and literally becomes man-made stone – regular pottery is fired at a lower temperature and is therefore more porous.
Stoneware rather than raku
Because stoneware is fired so high, it is dense and hard throughout, and it is dishwasher safe. Raku-fired ceramics have a more beautiful surface, but are more delicate. If the salt cellar is to be left out and used every day, stoneware is the durable choice.
