Blackboard Ekstra – deep-black magnetic knife holder with strong holding power

We often get requests for strong magnetic knife holders in an even darker shade than smoked oak. That's why we offer selected designs in solid, black-stained oak for those who want a deep-black knife holder with strong holding power. A magnetic knife strip in solid wood, handmade in Denmark.

The design has up to 100% more magnetic force than our standard models and is the obvious choice if you have knives that struggle to hold on magnetic knife holders from other makers. In the vast majority of cases, though, our standard models are more than sufficient and hold your knives securely and steadily.

Please note: Blackboard Ekstra is not recommended for knives with blades in traditional Japanese high-carbon steel, which chips easily. For those knives we recommend our standard models or designs with leather, cork or linoleum, which give a gentler contact. If in doubt, feel free to ask us before ordering.

Blackboard Ekstra is magnetic along its entire length, so you can easily hang 7–8 knives on a 40 cm model.

The magnets are invisibly encapsulated in the wood and arranged in several rows, so every blade has multiple contact points and a firm hold. Your knives won't slide, turn or be pulled towards each other.

All Blackboards come with concealed fixings; brackets, screws and wall plugs are included.

Sizes:
Blackboard Ekstra is made in black-stained oak in lengths from 40 to 120 cm. Choose a height of 6.5 cm or 8.5 cm.

Quality:
All our magnetic knife holders are made by hand in our own workshop in Denmark. Each knife holder goes through a long series of manual processes, is stained by hand with a brush and finally oiled with a furniture oil that gives a silky-smooth, long-lasting finish.

Unlike industrially spray-lacquered products, our black knife holders are stained by hand with a brush – a time-consuming job that gives the surface its lively, authentic look. The faint brush marks bear witness to the craftsmanship behind it and make every knife holder unique. The black stain subtly brings out the grain of the wood.

How to Choose the Right Magnetic Knife Holder

Which length should I choose?

The length determines how many knives your magnetic knife holder can hold. Lay your knives in a row with the spacing you want and measure the total width – that is the minimum length your new magnetic knife holder should have.

Which magnetic knife holders are the strongest?

A standard model 4.5 cm wide has more than enough power for the vast majority of kitchen knives. Width is therefore mainly a question of design – the magnetic strength is the same across widths within the same series.

Magnetic knife holders 4.5–8.5 cm wide have the same magnetic strength.
Magnetic knife holders 10–28 cm wide have approx. 50% stronger magnets.
All Extra Strong designs have 100% stronger magnets than the standard models.

If you have very large or heavy knives, we recommend a wide or Extra Strong model. The larger magnetic contact surface keeps the knives extra stable.

All sizes in the shop are given in centimetres. cm → inches: multiply by 0.39 · inches → cm: multiply by 2.54.

Mounting Magnetic Knife Holders With or Without Screws

All magnetic knife holders come with two hidden keyhole fittings on the back. We use different types of fittings depending on the design, but the principle is the same.

Two screws go into the wall, and the magnetic knife holder hangs on them. Screws and wall plugs are included with your order.

If you would rather mount it without screws, you can use construction adhesive or strong double-sided tape. We usually recommend No More Nails from Pattex, but any construction adhesive will work as long as your knives are not too heavy and the wall is perfectly flat. When ordering, please leave a note in the cart so we can leave the back completely smooth and unoiled – your adhesive or tape will grip far better.

Alternatively, we can position the fittings to match two grout lines in a tiled wall. All we need is the exact distance between the two joints when you order.

Magnetic mounting

If you prefer a solution with no screws and no adhesive at all, we offer Knifeboard Magnetic — a magnetic knife holder with a magnetic back, designed to mount straight onto a fridge, extractor hood or any other magnetic surface. It goes up and comes down without tools and without leaving a mark.

About Our Wood Species

We only use carefully selected FSC certified furniture wood. The primary wood types are oak and walnut.

We finish all products with a food-approved oil.

PLEASE NOTE that we always try to create unique and well-crafted products with an exciting visual expression and play of colors. You should therefore take our photos as a guide and not as a guarantee of how the finished product will appear.

Remember that wood is a living material. No two pieces of wood are the same, so all product photos are indicative.

Oak

- is a classic and well-known type of wood. The color of the inner part of the trunk (heartwood) ranges from reddish to gray-brown depending on the type of oak, and it darkens with age and exposure to light. The outer part of the trunk (sapwood) is lighter and without as much color pigment.

Smoked oak

- is oak that undergoes a steam treatment, which results in the coloring of the tannic acid in the oak. We only use "real" smoked oak from a reputable supplier - i.e. we do not take shortcuts by using a dark stain or dark-colored oil. Therefore, our smoked oak can also vary in color expression from product to product.

Depending on the wood's own acid content, the color after treatment can vary from light honey brown to deep black. The smoked wood contains no harmful substances after treatment.

PLEASE NOTE that the color and color play as well as the color depth of the finished smoked oak may vary. Therefore, 100% uniformity cannot be expected throughout the product. If you don't care about the finished result, we will of course exchange it with a smile😊

Please contact us before ordering if you have any special requests for the smoked oak. We can tint it from very light to very dark depending on your wishes.

American walnut

- is a very beautiful wood with vibrant grain patterns that vary from light to dark brown with a, at times, dark purple tinge. The grain patterns, colors and structure of walnut wood vary greatly - but it is always beautiful..

Use and Care of Magnetic Knife Holders and Knife Blocks

To keep both your knives and your magnetic knife holder or knife block in the best condition, always put the knives back only when they are completely clean and completely dry. Damp knives can damage the surface over time and leave marks.

Wipe your magnetic knife holder or knife block regularly with a slightly damp cloth, and avoid detergents and harsh chemicals. If needed, the surface can be refreshed with a little natural wood oil on a soft cloth.

Avoid placing the product close to strong heat sources or in direct sunlight, as this can dry out the wood and change its colour over time.

With proper care, your magnetic knife holder or knife block will keep its looks and its function for many years.

30-Day Right of Withdrawal

You have a 30-day right of withdrawal on all products — including made-to-order Woodworks products. Notify us at info@rune-jakobsen.dk within 30 days of receipt; you then have 14 days to return the item unused and undamaged.

You pay the cost of the return shipment yourself, unless it is a complaint. Danish customers can order a return label via Shipmondo. Once we have received the item, we refund the full purchase price.

Customs, VAT and Duties

All orders are shipped from our workshop and warehouse in Denmark. For customers in the EU, Norway, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, VAT is included in the price at checkout.

EU: Local VAT is included — no customs duties, no fees.
Norway: Norwegian VAT is paid in the webshop (VOEC 3053342). Below 3,000 NOK: no customs duty, the order is shipped DAP. Above 3,000 NOK: any customs duty is calculated and paid in the webshop, the order is shipped DDP. No extra charges on delivery.
United Kingdom, Switzerland/Liechtenstein and USA: All orders are shipped DDP — VAT and any customs duties are paid at checkout. The price you see is the final price.
Australia: Shipped DAP. Under 1,000 AUD: no duties or GST. Over 1,000 AUD: duties and GST are collected by the carrier before delivery.
Canada: Shipped DAP. GST/HST and any handling fee are collected on import; goods of EU origin are duty-free under CETA.

About Our Product Photography

Real products, honest pictures

With us, craftsmanship, materials and aesthetics are at the heart of everything we do. Our product images are designed to give you an honest and inspiring impression of what you're getting – without unnecessary staging.

The vast majority of product photos in our webshop are therefore taken by us – whether it's a grinder, a magnetic knife holder, a serving board or one of our textiles. The images of our wooden products always show genuine, handmade products that we photograph before they are packed and sent to their new owners.

To give you a better idea of how the products will look in different homes and kitchens, we sometimes insert these original photos into AI-generated rooms or backgrounds. Only the background is artificial – the product itself is never altered or AI-generated. Every grain, edge, color, and detail you see belongs to the physical product we created.

We also occasionally receive photos from satisfied customers who give us permission to use them in the webshop. These photos provide an honest and inspiring insight into how our products look in real homes and environments.

No artificial product renderings. No misleading visual enhancements. Just real craftsmanship, photographed honestly.

We are constantly expanding our product gallery. As many of our products come in a variety of sizes and variations, we do not yet have images of all of them.
